Frequently Asked Questions

  • Oh, I could write a novel... but I'll try to keep it short. Therapy has given me the space, tools, permission, and care to know myself in a way I didn't know was quite possible. My hope, as your therapist, is that you get to experience your version of the same.

Like the definition of "sonder" states, every one of us is living a vivid and complex life, intertwining in ways that sometimes feel beautiful and sometimes feel really hard. Therapy is a place for all of it. I can honestly tell you, I deeply love what I get to do in this work.

  • Due to my schedule changing frequency, I do not offer the option for clients to schedule their own sessions via my website. Head on over to the contact page or feel free to send me an email at kara@sondertherapygroup.com.

I offer free 15-minute consultation calls to potential new clients, giving us a change to connect and hear a bit more about what you're looking for out of therapy. It's a really great way for us both to make sure it feels like a good fit. No obligation- just helpful to connect!

  • Initial intake sessions are billed at the rate of $175, while subsequent individual sessions are $155.

  • I am in-network with most BCBS PPO, Blue Choice, United Healthcare (UHC) PPO, and Cigna PPO plans. I do also offer self-pay rates to those who choose to, for whatever reason, not use insurance to help cover therapy sessions. I can provide a monthly Superbill for folks wanting to take advantage of their out-of-network benefits.

I will run an insurance coverage check for those wanting to opt-in to their insurance benefits. However, it is your responsibility to check with your insurance company to confirm what they will and will not cover.

  • You can expect sessions to be 53-55 minutes long.

Please note that if you are late to a session, I am not able to make up that time at the end of session. In the case that you are more than 5 minutes late, I will send a text check-in. After waiting for 15 minutes without hearing from you, there will be a missed session fee charged.

  • First off, whatever you are feeling heading into our first session is normal. I intentionally put a lot of emphasis on the relationship building of the therapist-client dynamic. We will start to, together, develop a space that allows your vivid and complex story to be held safely.

I always like to tell clients that first sessions can feel a bit different than a re-occuring session. This is because, as therapists, we are needing to use the first session as an initial intake assessment to really get to know you. I will be gathering information about not only whats bringing you to therapy, but also about other aspects of your history, relationships, symptoms, supports, etc.

  • I hold a 24-hour cancellation policy for all of my clients. Because I know "life happens," I will waive the first missed session, however after that, if a session is canceled any time after the 24-hour mark, there will be a $100 charge to your card on file. When clients cancel a session, therapists offer that space to other clients who need an appointment that week. When clients cancel within 24-hours or do not show, other clients miss out on an opportunity to be seen. For this reason, and my own boundaries, I do hold this late cancellation fee.

That being said, if you need to reschedule a session and let me know more than 24-horus before... it's all good! Just send me an e-mail and we can see what we can make work to reschedule.

  • It is so important to me that all therapy sessions (virtual and in-person) are confidential. Everything discussed in sessions is between you and I, as your therapist. You may see me jot down notes during session, which is just a way I like keep my own brain organized. If you are using insurance, I will write up a general note, including a diagnosis, to submit with the claim, making a case for the benefit of therapy coverage. We will also talk about ways to ensure your virtual therapy space feels safe and confidential.

Exceptions to confidentiality include: If there is a reasonable belief that you are at harm to yourself or someone else; if (as a mandated reporter) there is reason to believe that a child or an elderly individual is at risk; court mandates/subpoenas; and if you fill out an ROI form for me to talk to another individual. The clinician (myself) and the client (you) will discuss if/when confidentiality needs to be breached.
